Voting is currently underway in polling booths across 35 Assembly constituencies lying across Malda, Murshidabad, Birbhum and Kolkata. It will end at 6:30 pm today.
A total 283 candidates including 10 women are in fray for 35 Assembly seats during this phase of elections. As many as 8,493,255 voters will exercise their franchise and decide the fate of these candidates.
The counting of votes will be held on May 2.
The Voter Verifiable Paper Audit Trail (VVPAT) is being used along with Electronic Voting Machine (EVM) at every polling station, with a view to enhance the transparency and credibility of the election process and the availability of adequate number of EVMs and VVPATs has already been ensured for the smooth conduct of elections.
In view of the prevailing COVID-19 pandemic, the option of Postal Ballot facility has been extended to the electors who are COVID- 19 positive or suspect as certified by competent authority and are in home or institutional quarantine along with those marked as Persons with Disabilities (PwD) and above the age of 80 years.
Bengal recorded 17,207 new cases over the last 24 hours, of which 3,821 cases surfaced in Kolkata. As many as 77 people have died due to Covid-19 in the State in the past 24 hours.
