Constitution Day is being celebrated today across the country to mark the adoption of the Indian Constitution by the Constituent Assembly. The day is also known as National Law Day and commemorates the adoption of the Constitution in India.
On 26th November in 1949, the Constituent Assembly of the country formally adopted the Constitution of India which came into force on 26th January 1950.
Constitution Day was first celebrated in 2015, when NDA Government decided to mark the day as a tribute to Ambedkar who played a key role in its framing as the Chairman of the Drafting Committee.
The Constitution of India declares India as a sovereign, socialist, secular, democratic republic, assuring its citizens justice, equality and liberty and endeavours to promote fraternity. It is the longest written constitution of any sovereign country in the world.
