Cuttack, Feb 28: Excise officials on Thursday seized 114 kg of ganja from an SUV near Nirgundi toll gate here in Odisha on Sunday and arrested two persons in this connection.
The accused persons have been identified as Mahesh Dash and Rakesh Kumar Panigrahi of Jharkhand.
On a tip-off, the Excise officials intercepted the SUV near Nirgundi toll gate on Sunday morning. On a search, they found 114 kg of ganja from the vehicle and subsequently seized the contraband items along with the vehicle.
The accused persons, who were transporting the contraband in the SUV, tried to flee from the spot but the officials overpowered them and arrested.
Excise officials said, the accused duo had procured the ganja from Kortaput district in the State and they were transporting the contraband items to Jharkhand.
The estimated cost of the seized ganja will be around Rs 11 lakh, a senior official said.
A case has been registered under Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act and the accused duo were forwarded to the court, he added.
