Boudh, Mar 18: Unearthing yet another case of illegal wildlife trade in the State, Forest Department officials seized a cache of smuggled timber, a barking deer and jungle cat meat by conducting separate raids in Nuamunda village under Baragaon panchayat on Thursday.
Based on a tip-off officials of Kantamal Forest Range raided one Dingar Naik’s house in Nuamunda village in the morning and came across 17 pieces of timber of Piasal, Mundi and Gadakhaira varieties. After he failed to produce necessary permit to sell these timbers, the officials seized those. Naik was taken into custody for wood smuggling subsequently.
Later, another raid was conducted at one Nilanchal Naik’s house. He was found to be possessing jungle cat meat weighing 5 kg and keeping a barking deer as pet. After seizure of the meat and the deer Nilanchal was taken into custody.
After health check-up by the Veterinarians the seized deer would be released into the forest, informed officials.
