Mohana, Jun 5: Tightening the noose around the necks of cattle traffickers, police rescued over 20 cows from a truck after the same was detained by some locals in Mohana area of Gajapati district on Friday night.
At least three persons including the driver, helper and their aide were taken into custody during the raid.
As per the report, Maharaja Krushna Chandra Gajapai Sangha, a local cow vigilante group intercepted a truck near Hill-Top College Chhak Mohana late last night on suspicion. After carrying out a search inside the same, the Sangha members came across the cows which were being transported under inhumane conditions.
Being intimated about the incident, Mohana Police rushed to the spot and asked the driver of the truck to submit the permit for cattle transport. He was taken into custody along with two others and the cows were rescued.
From the preliminary round of interrogation of the accused it has come to notice that the cattle were being sent from Gumma to Hyderabad, said police.
Further investigation into the case is underway.
