The first incident took place in Radhakrushnapur village under Sorada Police Station area in the morning while the villagers had been to the electric office to pay bills. Sparks erupted at a resident’s house and spread very fast to engulf 17 mores houses located in the neighbourhood.
“The incident took place at around 7 am in the morning while we had been to Sorada to pay electric bills. After getting a phone call from the village we reached the spot but by them everything had been gutted. I lost cash worth Rs 2 lakh, food grains and other valuable items to the blaze,” said Runu Swain, member of one of the victim family.
While the cause of the fire is yet to be ascertained, an electric short circuit is being seen as the most possible reason behind the same.
In a similar incident later in the morning, at least seven houses were reduced to ashes after a massive fire broke out in Kumutipadia village under Genja panchayat under the same block.
While fire brigade officials rushed to the spot and doused the flames, the mishap rendered a number of families homeless.
Locals have demanded monetary assistance from the administration for the affected families in both the incidents.
