Bhawanipatna, April 23: At least three suspected Maoists, including a woman cadre, were killed in an encounter carried out by security personnel in Lubengarh forest on the border of Kandhamal and Kalahandi districts in Odisha on Friday.
Following a specific inputs about the presence of Maoists, a joint team of District force, SOG and CRPF personnel launched a combing operation in the Lubengarh forest today and came across with the red ultras.
When the Maoists saw the security personnel, they reportedly opened fired indiscriminately. Subsequently the security forces returned fire on them leading to a fierce gun-battle.
“At least three suspected left-wing extremists were killed in the encounter. They are yet to be identified,” said a senior official.
The security personnel also recovered arms and ammunitions from the encounter site in the forest, he added.
Meanwhile, the combing operation has been intensified in the area following the incident.
