Karanjia, April 4: Forest Department officials have arrested at least six poachers by conducting a raid in Dumurdiha forest under Thakurmunda Range in Mayurbhanj district last night and seized barking deer meet from their possession.
Based on a tip-off on the poaching and illegal wildlife trade running inside Dumurdiha forest located adjacent to Kendumundi Reserve Forest a patrolling team raided the area late in the night.
During the raid, at least six poachers were found sharing venison among them post hunting a barking deer. They were taken into custody immediately and the bow and arrows possessed by them were seized.
The held poachers have been booked under the Wildlife Protection Act and their further interrogation is underway, said an official.
Notably, a sharp rise in wildlife trading has been seen in the State in past couple of weeks. In a similar incident on Forest staff had seized 4 kg elk meat by conducting a raid in Angarapada village in Udala in the same district on February 13 this year. A poacher identified as Gopal Singh had been taken into custody during the raid.
