The incident occurred at Soroda village under Kolnora block in Rayagada district this morning when a pregnant woman, Pushpanjali Kondagiri, of the village developed labour pain.
Soon, the family members dialled for a 108 ambulance to take the woman to the hospital. The ambulance arrived, but it could not reach the village due to the muddy road. Instead, the ambulance stopped around two kilometres away from the village.
In the meantime, the woman delivered a baby girl at their house. However, her condition deteriorated and she was needed a quick medical assistance.
Left with no other option, the family members and the ambulance staff decided to carry the woman on a cot for two kilometres to avail the ambulance.
From there, the ambulance took the woman to the primary health centre (PHC) at Ramnaguda for her treatment.
It is not an isolated case in the district. Several villages in the district lack all-weather motorable roads for which patients and expectant mothers are being carried on cot or sling to reach the hospital.
