The deceased has been identified as Sagar Pradhan, a resident of Durgapur under Jarapada police station limits in the district.
Family members alleged that one Gobinda Pradhan along with his accomplices of the same locality killed Sagar with an axe at around 3 am today when the latter was watching “Danda Nacha”, a traditional dance festival organised in the village.
The accused persons belong to ruling Biju Janata Dal (BJD).
Political rivalry is said to be the reason behind the murder as Sagar had supported a BJP candidate during the recently held Panchayat polls, alleged the family members adding that an altercation was also occurred between the two during the rural polls.
On being informed Jarapada Police reached the spot and detained the main accused, Gobinda Pradhan, from the village. Police also seized the axe used in the crime for the possession of the accused.
“We have detained a person and seized a weapon in connection with the murder case. Efforts are on to nab the other accused. Further investigation is underway,” a police officer said.
