Bhadrak, Jan 28: Putting Bhadrak MLA Sanjib Kumar Mallick in a soup, both the opposition parties BJP and Congress have accused him of being hand-in-gloves with drug mafia.
Opposition parties targeted the BJD MLA after a photo featuring him alongside a held drug peddler went viral on social media recently.
As per the report, the Special Task Force (STF) of Odisha Crime Branch had conducted a raid at Bhadrak-Chandbali road and arrested Minhaz Quadri of Shankarnagar area over possessing 1.14 kg brown sugar. The cost of the seized brown sugar will by over Rs 1 Cr in the international market.
After Quadri was booked under section 21(c) and 29 of the NDPS Act, 1985 a number of photographs featuring him alongside the local BJD MLA went viral on social media. The accused could be seen attending a meeting or taking part in a bike rally along with the MLA and his supporters.
Post surfacing of the photographs both BJP and Congress accused Mallick of patronising the drug business in the district. They also went to the extent of speaking that the clean and transparent image projected by BJP is a delusion.
“Drug trafficking and illegal liquor trade has gone up sharply in Bhadrak after the 2019 Assembly election. The incumbent local MLA has close nexus with the drug mafia. Due to his patronage, police fear to act against the mafia in the district. He should clarify on the issue,” said BJP Bhadrak President Hemant Padhi.
Similarly, local Congress leader Nalini Kanta Mohanty has accused the BJD MLA of having a link with drug peddler Quadri.
“We were holding a demonstration before SP office in the district a few days back to make Bhadrak liquor free. After the local MLA found in several photographs with a drug peddler, now it is clear that the ruling party has close link with the traffickers. The MLA must clarify on the same,” said Mohanty.
