Bhubaneswar, Jan 28: The Odisha unit of the Congress Kisan Morcha on Thursday demanded that the State Government procure all balance paddy from farmers at MSP and provide bonus of Rs 500 per every quintal of paddy in eight days' time.
An 11-member Congress Kisan Morcha team led by State president Amiya Patnaik submitted a memorandum to Governor Prof Ganeshi Lal in this regard today.
“We moved to a large number of Mandis in south and western Odisha. We saw thousands of quintals of paddy piled up under the open sky. Farmers are facing distress sale due to non-procurement of paddy. They are selling paddy at Rs 1,300 or Rs 1,400 against MSP of Rs 1,868,” alleged Patnaik.
He said the State Government has so far procured 40% of paddy.
He demanded that the Government directly purchase paddy from farmers at right prices and stop deducting four to five kg a quintal in the name of FAQ. The Government should stop procuring paddy through millers, he demanded further.
Patnaik threatened that the Kisan Morcha would go to each mandi and take to streets in a massive way if the State Government doesn’t procure all paddy from farmers and doesn’t pay bonus of Rs 500 to farmers per quintal of paddy procured from them in eight days.
