Panic gripped villagers of Badamba area in Odisha’s Cuttack district after locals spotted crocodiles in Mahanadi river on Sunday.
Cuttack, Jul 18: Panic gripped villagers of Badamba area in Odisha’s Cuttack district after locals spotted crocodiles in Mahanadi river on Sunday.
The crocodiles were first spotted in the river near Mali Sahi ghat of Karabar village under Bhapur block in the district, locals claimed.
Villagers alleged that the crocodiles were washed away in the river from Tikarpada area after the Hirakud dam authorities opened the gates of the reservoir to release flood water on July 11.
The season’s first floodwater was released from Hirakud dam on last Sunday following incessant rains in the upper basin of Mahanadi River.
Meanwhile, Badamba Forest Range asked the residents of Gopinathpur, Tulpur, Mugagahir village and the adjacent area to remain alert while venturing into the river.
It also urged the people not to kill the crocodiles but to hand over them to the concerned forest officials if the reptiles were caught in the fishing net.
