Bhubaneswar, May 31: Properties worth over Rs 87 crore belonging to the Water Resources Department of Government of Odisha were damaged due to very severe cyclonic storm Yaas that hit the coast near Balaosr on May 26 and the subsequent flood.
A primary assessment report prepared by the department has revealed this.
According to the report, while the cost of damages made to large irrigation project and saline embankments is estimated to be Rs 69.16 crore, drainage loss stood at 7.66 crore and lift irrigation damages cost 2.63 croe and medium project properties worth Rs 7.08 crore have been damaged.
Assessment of all damages has not been made as many areas in Balasore district have still remained inundated. “It is expected that the floodwater will recede by tomorrow and then damages can be assessed fully,” said an official.
While a total of 77 embankments breached, 35 of them have been repaired by now. All the breached embankments will be repaired before monsoon, said the official.
