Newly appointed Congress Odisha in-charge Dr A Chella Kumar on Friday claimed that his party would return to power in the state in 2024.
Mr Kumar, who held discussions with party leaders here for two days, in his first press conference listed out the failures of the state government and said his party would go the people will all these issues to expose the BJD government.
“In his 21 years of rule, the ruling BJD in Odisha has not been able to lift the socio-economic conditions of the state. Industries have been closed, migration of poor people to other state continues, irrigation network still remain neglected and the overall law and order situation is quite alarming. Women and girl children are not safe here because of increasing crime against them,” Dr Kumar said.
Dubbing the Odisha CM Naveen Patnaik as an “inaccessible man,” the Congress leader said neither BJD leaders nor his ministers had free access to him and the common people never got an opportunity to interact with him.
Dr Kumar said democracy in Odisha had long been murdered by the ruling BJD which ran the administration like a company.
He informed that the Congress state unit will soon revamp its grassroots organizations and launch a massive social connect programme aiming to return to power in the 2024 elections.
“All the committees of the Pradesh Congress Committee will be constituted in the next one month and we will galvanise our party machinery from village level. Nobody can stop us from returning to power in 2024 assembly elections,” said Dr Kumar.
The Congress in Odisha has been struggling to return to power since 2000 when it lost to the Biju Janata Dal. The party’s fortune has plummeted from 33.78 per cent in 2000 assembly polls to 16.12 per cent in 2019 elections.
