Karanjia, Apr 4: At least one person was killed and another sustained critical injuries after a chicken-laden van hit a roadside tree near Chainbainsi petrol pump on Thakurmunda-Karanjia road in Mayurbhanj district on Monday.
The deceased has been identified as Bijay Lohar (28), the driver of the van and a native of Keonjhar district.
The critically injured person is Panu, a resident of Kankada village under Karanjia.
The mishap took place in the wee hours today at around 5 am while the victim duo was en-route to Thakurmunda from Kapilash via Karanjia to deliver a chicken consignment. Bijay lost control over the wheels of his pickup van bearing registration number-OD 09 Q 0168 a few yards away from Chainbainsi petrol from resulting in the crash.
While, Bijay died by remaining inside the mangled van and Panu was rescued by Thakurmunda Police to be rushed to the nearby Community Health Centre (CHC). He was later shifted to SCB Medical in Cuttack for better treatment.
Police have seized the vehicle and launched an investigation into the mishap.
