Bhubaneswar, May 3: The Election Commission of India (EC) on Monday deferred the by-election in Pipili assembly constituency of Odisha till further notice due to surge in Covid-19 cases. The Pipili by-poll was scheduled to be held on May 16.
The EC also postponed the elections in Jangipur and Samserganj assembly segments of West Bengal.
“The Commission after taking all material facts and inputs of CEO West Bengal and CEO Odisha in consideration and taking note of the lockdown and restrictions under Disaster Management Act, 2005, has decided to defer the scheduled poll and extended the period of by elections in 110-Pipili assembly constituency of Odisha and 58-Jangipur & 56-Samserganj constituencies of West Bengal. Fresh notification will be intimated after assessing the pandemic situation,” said the ECI in a statement.
The polling for the Pipili by-election, which was earlier countermanded following the death of Congress nominee Ajit Mangaraj due to Covid-19, was scheduled to be held on May 16. It was originally scheduled on April 17.
The by-poll was necessitated for the Pipli assembly segment due to the demise of BJD MLA Pradeep Maharathy in October 2020. Maharathy also died of Covid-19 related complications.
