The by-election in the Pipili assembly segment, which was scheduled for April 17, was adjourned yesterday following the demise of Congress candidate Ajit Mangaraj due to Covid-19.
Briefing the media here, Lohani said, “As per section 52 (1), (c) of Representation of People’s Act, the returning officer has adjourned the Pipili by-election yesterday and the matter has been notified to the Election Commission of India,”
“The Election Commission of India will issue a fresh notification for the by-election,” he added.
Congress leader Mangaraj who was contesting the by-election died of Covid-19 yesterday while going treatment at a private hospital in the State Capital.
Mangaraj had tested positive for Covid-19 on April 10.
The by-poll was necessitated for the Pipli assembly segment due to the demise of BJD MLA Pradeep Maharathy in October 2020. Maharathy was also died of Covid-19.
