Bhubaneswar, Apr 3: Vice President M Venkaiah Naidu on Saturday called upon students to take inspiration from glorious past of the country and Odisha and become good entrepreneurs and innovators and transform the country both socially and economically.
He too advised universities and educational institutions to equip the students with requisite skills so that they can job creators not seekers.
The Vice-President was addressing at the 50th Convocation of Utkal University here.
“We must not forget that India has had a glorious tradition of international education. We should bring back the great Indian tradition to creat well-rounded and innovative individuals who will have the distinctive ability to transform the country both socially and economically,” said Naidu.
Turning to Odisha glorious past, the VP said, “Odisha has a rich and inspiring history. This great land of Kalinga taught the lesion of peace to Emperor Ashok who began to follow the policy of conquest through Dharma. The Kalinga Empire was also known for its glorious maritime traditions. The daring ocean-faring merchants of Kalinga established trade links with Sri Lanka, Java, Sumatra, Borneo, Bali and Burma. I want you to take inspiration from their stories and imbibe the spirit of entrepreneurship and innovations.”
Stating that the aim of education is not only cognitive development, he said it also builds character and holistic and well-rounded individuals. He advised students to face the world with confidence.
Mentioning that Odisha is home to 62 different tribal communities, the Vice-President said, “Paternalistic attitude towards tribals is wrong. We should learn from the tribal communities who live a simple life in harmony with nature.”
On the occasion, Naidu presented the honorary Doctor of Literature (D. Litt.) degree to five dignitaries- RBI Governor Shaktikanta Das, CAG Girish Chandra Murmu, Orissa High Court Judge Justice Sanju Panda, Bhabha Atomic Research Center Director Ajit Kumar Mohanty and Odisha Adarsha Vidyalaya Sangathan Adviser Bijaya Kumar Sahoo.
