Cuttack, April 17: Dreaded gangster Sheikh Hyder, who was brought back to Odisha from Telangana on Friday five days after escaping from SCB Medical College and Hospital in Cuttack, has tested positive for Covid-19, police said on Saturday.
“Hyder had undergone RT-PCR test and his report came out positive. He has been shifted to isolation ward in Choudwar jail here. His remand has also been put on hold,” said a senior police officer.
All the police personnel, who were engaged to arrest of the criminal and who have come in contact with him after his arrival in the State, have been asked to stay in isolation and take precaution, he added.
Yesterday, the Court of Judicial Magistrate First Class (JMFC) Cuttack allowed Mangalabag Police to take Hyder on a seven-day remand.
On Thursday, a special team of Cuttack Police nabbed the gangster from Sangareddy district with the help of their Telangana counterparts.
He was brought to Bhubaneswar by a flight on Friday morning. Later, he was produced before the JMFC here in connection with the case registered at Mangalabag police station following his escape from SCB Hospital.
The notorious criminal had been lodged in Sambalpur jail after being convicted in two murder cases. He was referred to the SCB Hospital by the VIMSAR in Burla on March 23.
