Bhubaneswar, Sep 18: The Department of Pediatrics, AIIMS Bhubaneswar, has reached another milestone by treating a young girl who was suffering from a rare lungs disease called "Pulmonary Alveolar Proteinosis".
The girl is the youngest child in the whole country to have undergone this procedure, claimed the AIIMS Bhubaneswar.
According to the hospital, a 22-month-old girl from Dhenkanal had Covid 19 along with other family members in June 2021 and recovered. In July 2021, she developed fever with breathing difficulty, for which she was admitted to various hospitals of Cuttack and Bhubaneswar. On being referred, she was admitted to the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU) of AIIMS.
After investigations, she was suspected to be suffering from Pulmonary alveolar proteinosis, a rare disease in which milk-like materials get deposited in both the lungs, which the child cannot cough out. The only available treatment option for this disease is washing both lungs with saline, which is technically challenging in such a sick child.
So, an expert team of doctors was formed, and the group decided to do the lung washing (whole lung lavage) by putting the child on ECMO support (Artificial lungs). The team included Dr Krishna Mohan Gulla, Dr Rashmi Ranjan Das, Dr Amit Kumar Satapathy of Pediatrics Department, Dr Satyajit Mishra and Dr Bikram Kishore Behera of Anaesthesia Department, Dr Sidharth Kumar Sathia and Dr Satyapriya Mohanty of Cardio-thoracic Surgery department and Dr Manoj Mohanty and team Pediatric Surgery.
The expert team was helped by other faculty, residents and nursing officers and support staff from Pediatrics and Anaesthesia department as the procedure was complicated and took the whole day to finish. The team did the entire procedure uneventfully on August 30 2021. After this, the girl's condition improved dramatically, and she went a second such procedure on September 13, which made her condition further better.
Today, she was discharged with a small minimal oxygen requirement and advised to follow up with the AIIMS.
