Bhubaneswar, Feb 21: An “Expectation from Budget” study conducted by the Argus News has revealed that people want more budgetary allocations for agriculture and education sectors and employment generation and an immediate slash in prices of fuels and essential commodities.
Opinions of people from different regions were taken ahead of Annual Budget scheduled to be presented in the State Assembly on Monday.
“More than 70 per cent of people depend on agriculture to meet their financial needs. The Government should make a provision for teaching students on agriculture from school level so that educated youths can take to agriculture as profession and people will not go outside in search of works,” said Abhijit Das, a resident of Cuttack.
“As farmers, workers and people belonging to all sections have been affected by Covid 19 pandemic. The Government should allocate more expenditure in Agriculture sector. Irrigation facilities, agriculture infrastructure, storage system and organic farming should be given focus,” said a resident of Sambalpur.
Lilu Bhoi, a PhD student of IIT Khadagpur and a resident of Sambalpur, said the Government should give more focus on development of agriculture and industry sector so that more people can get employment and economy can grow. “The Government should adopt policies for development of both agriculture and industry sectors. Odisha is rich in natural resources but has less number of industries as compared to many other States,” said he.
Jyotirmayee Panda of Puri said there should be more focus on students and their career. The Government should create more jobs for youths.
“The Government should take steps to cut prices of LPG refilling, petrol and diesel and essential commodities,” said Pratima Mishra, a social activist of Puri.
Puri MLA Jayant Sarangi said he expects that the Budget will have sufficient provision of funds for development of Puri. “Whatever amount to be presented will have 60 per cent contribution from the Union Government. There are also many projects being fully funded by the Centre. The State will have a very a low share of funds in the State. I expect more funds to be provisioned for development Puri city,” said the MLA.
The State Government should make a special scheme to provide employments to migrant workers in this Budget. The State Government should slash VAT rate on petrol and diesel so that people can benefit a lot,” said Biswanath Das, a resident of Puri.
