Bhubaneswar, May 31: Noted health expert Dr Niroj Mishra on Monday said the Covid positivity rate is on the decline and the lockdown would help it go down further in coming days.
“On May 5, when lockdown was first imposed in the current second wave, the positivity rate was about 26%. Now, the rate has come down to about 14%. The lockdown has been extended till June 17. It will help the positivity rate go down further,” said Dr Mishra.
He said the positivity rate will be on a flattening more for a few days as some of the people, who are now engaged in restoratin work in cyclone-affected areas, might test positive. But the declining trend will be restored again. It is expected that the positivity rate will decline to 5% in two weeks’ time, he said.
He hailed the State Government’s decision of relaxing lockdown guidelines in three districts, Nuapada, Sundargarh and Gajapati, in the wake of the Covid positivity rate declining to 5%.
He, however, said local administrations should see that weddings are held with participation of stipulated number of persons. He said people should remain alert till a complete vaccination is achieved.
“Efficacy of vaccines goes low due to new strains of the virus. As number positive cases in rural areas are rising, Odisha is unlikely to see a sharp decline in the positivity rate as is seen in other States. But the number would come down to three digits by July,” said Dr Mishra.
