Police arrested Sanjib Subudhi for allegedly duping several beneficiaries of PMAY-G and BPGY in Umerkote area of Nabarangpur district.
Nabarangpur, Jul 10: Amid the State-wide agitation staged by Opposition BJP over irregularities in rural housing scheme in Odisha, police arrested a 40-year-old contractor for allegedly duping several beneficiaries of PMAY-G and BPGY in Umerkote area of Nabarangpur district on Friday night.
The accused contactor has been identified as Sanjib Subudhi of Umerkote.
As per reports, some residents of Kurshi village under Umerkote block had received work order for the pucca houses under Pradhan Mantri Awas (Grameen) Yojana and Biju Pucca Ghar Yojana five years back. The beneficiaries include Phulmati Gond, Mangati Gond, Mari Gond and Rajabati – all belong to ST community.
After knowing about the work order, Subudhi approached the beneficiaries and assured them to construct the houses under PMAY-G and BPGY in low cost. Believing on Subudhi, the beneficiaries handed over the construction work to him.
Subsequently, Subudhi collected the bank pass books and Aadhar cards of the beneficiaries. Thereafter, Subudhi started construction work of the houses but didn't complete in the five years.
Subudhi allegedly managed to pass the final bill of all the houses. He also took them to the concerned bank in Umerkote and withdrew the grant money.
Later, the beneficiaries requested the accused contractor to return their bank passbooks and Aadhar cards at least.
However, Subudhi abused the beneficiaries in filthy language aspersing their caste & community and threatened to kill them if they would visit again.
Later, the beneficiaries lodged separate complaints against Subudhi at Umerkote police station following which the latter was arrested.
Subudhi has been booked under Section 420, 294, 506, 406 of IPC and SC/ST Atrocities Act, and forwarded to the court, police said.
