Berhampur, Jan 28: A man was beaten to death by a group of villagers during a clash over land dispute in Hirapalli village under Polasara block of Ganjam district on Thursday.
The incident sparked widespread concern, after somebody shot the video on his mobile phone and made the same viral on social media later.
As per the allegation of the son of the deceased identified as Prabhakar Gouda, a group of villagers tried to encroach a piece of land owned by his family by constructing a boundary wall yesterday. As the deceased opposed the construction a verbal duel erupted between the two sides.
After the victim lodged a complaint at the local police station and returned home a group of 6-7 people attacked him with sticks to kill on the spot, added his son.
The villagers even didn’t allow an ambulance which had reached the village to rush the critically injured victim to hospital post the attack. He was taken to Polasara hospital in an auto-rickshaw by family members and then shifted to MKCG Hospital in Berhampur to be declared dead.
Police have seized the body for autopsy after the incident and started investigation based on the FIR filed by him earlier against Bhaskar Sahoo and six others of the village.
