Sub Inspector Reena Baxala, Officer-In-Charge (OIC) of Sarat Police Station in the district was placed under suspension with immediate effect from March 28, 2021 for her gross misconduct and dereliction of duty, said an order issued by Mayurbhanj SP on Sunday.
Baxala has been attached to headquarters in Baripada, it added.
Official sources said that the disciplinary action against the OIC was taken after she allegedly made a pregnant woman walk three kilometres during a helmet checking drive.
As per reports, a helmet checking drive was underway in Sarat Police Station area on Sunday morning.
A pregnant woman, identified as Gurubari Biruli, was pillon riding with her husband Bikram Biruli on his motorcycle for a routine health check-up to Udala hospital.
As Gurubari was not wearing a helmet, the police personnel slapped a fine. Then, her husband reportedly told the cops that he would pay the fine online as he didn’t have enough money in cash. However, the police personnel did not heed his request.
Subsequently, an argument broke out between Bikram and the police personnel following which he was taken to the police station in the police van.
Left with no option, Gurubari walked to the police station which was 3 km away from the checking post.
Following the incident, the pregnant woman demanded action against the OIC. After taking cognizance of the situation the Mayurbhanj SP suspended the Sarat Police Station OIC, officials added.
