Angul, Feb 9: In an interesting incident, mistaken for child lifters a police team was detained by residents in Amana Sanjapada village under Banarpal Police Station in Angul district on Monday.
As per the report, a team of Banarpal Police had been to Sanjapada village to arrest a few suspects involved in looting oil from Indian Oil Corporation Limited (IOCL) tankers last afternoon when the attack took place.
Finding the cops in civil dress, the villagers failed to identify them and detained on the suspicion of being child lifter. Later, without listening to their repeated clarifications, the public started thrashing them black and blue in which four cops sustained injuries.
The angry mob also attacked the van which the police had used to visit the village and vandalized completely.
Later, another police team reached the spot and rescued the injured personnel from the clutches of the villagers.
At least 18 villagers have been detained in connection with the case and they are under interrogation now, say reports.
