Rourkela, Feb 16: The new international hockey stadium in Rourkela will be named after noted freedom fighter Birsa Munda, announced Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik while laying the foundation stone for the stadium here on Tuesday.
The stadium will be the second venue for the Hockey World Cup 2023, reiterated the Chief Minister.
The Chief Minister said, “Once completed, the international stadium will be called as the Birsa Munda Hockey Stadium. The new stadium in Rourkela will be a benchmark in design for hockey, offering one of the finest spectator experiences. With a seating capacity of over 20,000, it will become largest Hockey Stadium in India.”
The stadium site is located inside the campus of the Biju Patnaik University of Technology and adjacent to the air strip.
Patnaik also laid foundation for Astro-Turfs in all 17 blocks of Sundargarh district as to nurture the budding hockey talents of the region.
Today, the Chief Minister also inaugurated several projects worth Rs 835 crore and laid foundation for different projects worth Rs 4080 crore for the socio economic development of Sundargarh district.
