Bhubaneswar, Feb 20: The Odisha Legislative Assembly (OLA) continued witnessing pandemonium and was adjourned till 4 pm as Opposition BJP and Congress members protested against non-procurement of paddy in the Well of the House during morning hours today.
As soon as the House met for the day, BJP and Congress members rushed to the well of the House and demanded a detailed discussion on delay in paddy procurement and steps taken by the State Government to resolve the issue. The Opposition members held banners and posters in the hands and shouted slogans against the State Government.
Unable to run the proceedings of the House, Speaker Surjya Narayan Patro adjourned the House at 10.33 am till 11.30 am and then till 4 pm.
“Earlier, the Government had promised to procure paddy from all farmers in seven days time. But, it has not procured a single bag of paddy even as more than seven days have already passed,” said Congress MLA Suresh Routray.
BJP Chief Whip Mohan Charan Majhi said the BJP has placed a demand for discussion of farmer issues through a motion and has not accepted the Speaker’s yesterday ruling asking the Cooperation Minister to make a statement in the House on Saturday. “We want a detailed discussion on the paddy procurement and other farmer issues in the House,” said Majhi.
As per the Assembly programme sheet, discussion on the Motion of Thanks to the Governor’s Address is scheduled to continue for the second day today.
