The State Government has asked district administrations of coastal districts to evacuate people living in kutcha houses and low lying areas in view of cyclone Jawad, informed Special Relief Commissioner (SRC) PK Jena.
"We have asked the district administrations to evacuate people living in kutcha houses and low lying areas of Ganjam, Khurda (Chilika area), Puri, Jagatsinghpur, Kendrapara and Niali area of Cuttack district,” Jena said.
“All necessary measures like deployment of NDRF, ODRAF and Fire Service teams, cyclone shelters, logistics and evacuation measures are being planned in keeping with the anticipated trajectory of the impending cyclonic storm,” he added.
The Odisha Government cancelled the weekly holiday on Sunday, December 5. It also cancelled the leave of all State Government employees for next few days.
The SRC has directed to all the State Government officials to stay at their respective headquarters and asked return from leave those who are availing the same.
As per the latest forecast by the Indian Meteorological Department, the Deep depression in the Bay of Bengal intensified into cyclonic storm ‘Jawad’ at around 11.30 am. It is likely to move northwestwards & reach north Andhra Pradesh – south Odisha coasts by December 4 morning. Thereafter, the cyclonic storm is likely to recurve north-northeastwards and move along Odisha coast reaching near Puri around December 5 noon.
The IMD predicted heavy rainfall accompanied with gusty winds are likely to hit many areas of coastal Odisha due to the cyclone.
Jena appealed to the people especially of the coastal districts not to venture out into the open during that period.
