The held peddler has been identified as Hadibandhu Sahu, a sales manager by profession.
Based on intelligence input on the opium consignment which Sahu was carrying on his scooter, the Berhampur Excise Unit officials intercepted him near MKCG play ground in the morning. During his search Sahu was found possessing several opium packets in a bag without necessary permit.
He was taken into custody by the officials and the packets were seized.
During his interrogation Sahu has admitted to his involvement in opium trade. While the opium is in widespread use by Ayurvedic pharmacies to prepare medicines, he had adopted the business while working as a sales manager at a ‘bhang’ shop sometimes back, informed Excise officials.
The accused was supplying opium to several customers in Ganjam and its neighborhood. The market value of the opium seized today will be around Rs 4 lakh, they added.
