Bhadrak, Feb 24: Tension prevailed at Bhadrak Station Chhak last night after locals detained a pickup van for carrying over 20 cattle illegally and later handed it over to Bhadrak Town Model Police.
As per the report, getting a tip-off on the illegal cattle transport to a neighbouring State late last night, Bajrang Dal activists swung into action and detained a Bolero pickup van bearing registration number-OD 21 5988 at Station Chhak under Bhadrak town.
While the driver and the helper of the van managed to escape from the spot during the detention, Bajrang Dal activists accompanied by a group of locals rescued about 20 cattle from the same.
The cattle were being sent to Kolkata of neighbouring West Bengal from Bhadrak under inhumane conditions, said the activists.
Despite all efforts to check the illegal cattle transport from the district, the traffickers are managing to run their trade due to a nexus with police, they claimed.
Notably, on Dec 6 last year, local residents in Soro of Balasore had detained at least 20 vehicles trafficking over 300 cattle illegally to neighboring State West Bengal. Earlier on November 24, the residents of Haripur village under Simulia Police limits in Balasore led by Bajrang Dal activists had seized a cattle-laden pickup van and detained eight persons.
