Bhubaneswar, Feb 15: Union Minister of Petroleum & Natural Gas and Steel Dharmendra Pradhan on Monday offered his condolences over the demise of retired Major General Basant Kumar Mahapatra, who passed away today.
“I am saddened by the death of Major General Basant Kumar Mohapatra, a retired Odia Army officer. Late Mohapatra had held many important positions in the Indian Army and shown his heroism throughout his career. His contribution towards the motherland will always be remembered,” Pradhan tweeted in Odia.
“I express my condolences to the bereaved family and wish the departed soul rest in peace,” he added.
Mahapatra, who had participated in four major wars including the one between India and China in 1965, passed away at his residence here in Odisha. He was 88.
He was commissioned into armoured corps (Tanks) of the Indian Army as a Combat Officer. Acknowledging his contribution, the President of India had conferred the most prestigious Ati Vishisht Seva Medal (AVSM) on Major General Mahapatra.
