Bhubaneswar, Feb 22: In what could be dubbed as a massive success to Odisha Police, it has arrested the prime accused in 1999 Anjana Mishra gang rape case Biban Biswal from Maharashtra’s Pune on Monday.
Informing on the arrest of Biban, Twin City Commissioner of Police, Sudhansu Sarangi said at a press conference here that the accused had gone underground in Lonavala area in Maharashtra State by changing his name.
Biban had prepared a fake identity proof to work as a plumber in Aamby Valley and told his family in Odisha to obtain a Death Certificate to prove he is dead, said Sarangi.
Odisha Police succeeded in arresting the accused through its operation called ‘Silent Viper’ after carrying out its investigation into the case three years back. Maharashtra Police’s help was also taken during the operation.
On January 9, 1999 Biban and two of his aides had raped 29-year Anjana Mishra inside her car on Bhubaneswar-Barang road. Post the incident, the then Chief Minister of Odisha JB Patnaik had to resign from his post facing severe criticism.
