He alleged that famers have been forced to go for distress sale due to non-procurement of paddy at Mandis.
“As per the Government schedule, Rabi paddy had to be procured from farmers at Mandis since May 5. However, paddy is not being procured at MSP and, thus, farmers are selling the crop at Rs 1,000 per quintal to private parties,” alleged Purohit.
He said 10 to 20% of tokens issued to farmers for procurement of paddy have already lapsed. Millers are lifting paddy from Mandis as they like. They are deducting 5/6kg per quintal of paddy in the name of FAQ,” he alleged,.
Even as a token-holder farmer is entitled to sell upto 64 quintals of paddy, the farmers have been asked to sell 1quintal, 2 quintals and 5 quintals of paddy this time, Purohit said. He added that famers are selling paddy at Rs 1,000 per quiental now.
Farmers in Bargarh, Bolangir, Sonepur, Kalahndi, Keonjhar and Nuapada districts have expressed strong resentment over the non-procurment of paddy.
