According to sources, Mohapatra’s mortal remains were brought to the village in an ambulance from AIIMS-Bhubaneswar last night.
Puri Sub-collector Bhabataran Sahoo, Additional Superintendent of Police Purna Chandra Pradhan and other officials paid last respect to the departed soul.
Wearing a PPE kit, Mohapatra’s grandson lit the funeral pyre in presence of a handful of relatives and State Government officials.
Mohapatra succumbed to Covid-19 while undergoing treatment at AIIMS, Bhubaneswar on Sunday afternoon. He was 78.
He was admitted to AIIMS, Bhubaneswar on April 22 after he was infected with the virus.
Born into a Biswakarma family in Puri’s Pathuria Sahi, Mohapatra was honoured with Padma Shri in 1975 and Padma Bhushan in 2001. He was also awarded Padma Vibhushan in 2013 for his contribution towards enriching the field of stone sculpting. He had trained more than 2,000 students and restored many monuments.
President Ram Nath Kovind, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Odisha Governor Ganeshi Lal, Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik, Union Ministers Dharmendra Pradhan and Pratap Sarangi were among the leaders who expressed their grief over the demise of the renowned sculptor.
