Bhadrak, July 12: A rare golden turtle weighing around 2 kg was rescued near a house in Kasturikana village under Orasahi panchayat in Bhadrak district on Monday.
The turtle was spotted by Sukumar Singh while roaming on his backyard in the morning. Sukumar who is a government high school teacher took the turtle to his home and intimated about the same to Forest Department officials.
The golden turtle is a rare species which found in freshwater and never seen here. Due to climate change it might have fled to this part of the State, said Forest Department officials after reaching the spot.
After Sukumar handed over the turtle to Forest staff they have released the same into Baitarani river.
Notably, this is not for the first time that a golden turtle has been found in Chandbali. On August 10 last year, a farmer of Bentalpur village namely Nirakar Mohanty had also found a golden turtle from paddy field. Later, the aquatic species had been handed over to Forest Department.
