Last year too, some Gharial cubs had taken birth in the gorge. Since then, forest and sanctuary officials have been very glad. However, they are facing a big challenge in safe upbringing of the cubs.
This is so perceived from the fact that 25 of the 28 gharial cubs hatched last year have been missing. Three of them were recovered from the Puri Canal and kept under guidance in the Nandankanan Zoological Park.
“This year, we have guarding the movement of the cubs through CCTV cameras. We have also restricted the entry of visitors to the Baladamara area where 30 cubs have taken birth recently,” said an elated DFO.
