Sundargarh, Mar 4: Vigilance sleuths on Thursday arrested the Block Education Officer (BEO) of Hemgiri Block in Odisha’s Sundargarh district and a junior clerk of his office on charges of demanding and accepting bribe from a headmaster.
According to official sources, the BEO, identified as Surendra Kumar Sahu and the clerk, identified as Biranchi Khilei, were held for accepting bribe of Rs 35,000 from Narayan Bagh, the headmaster of Sahaspur U.P. School.
The BEO has allegedly demanded Rs 50,000 bribe from the headmaster not to initiate any departmental action against him for abnormal delay in submission of utilization certificates from 2010 to 2021.
The headmaster however approached the Vigilance Department and sought action against the BEO.
Accordingly, the Vigilance officials laid a trap and caught the BEO red-handed while he was accepting bribe of Rs 35,000 from the headmaster through the clerk.
“The bribe money was recovered from the possession of the accused persons. A case has been registered and further investigation is underway,” said an official.
