Bhubaneswar, Jun 9: Director, Medical Education and Training (DMET) Dr CBK Mohanty on Wednesday said the tender process for procurement of ECMO machines has been completed and efforts are on to bring the machines from abroad.
“ECMO treatment is needed when ventilator support fails. It is a very expensive treatment process which primarily costs around Rs 4-5 lakh & then Rs 1-2 lakh on a daily basis. Tendering process is over and efforts are on to bring the machines from abroad,” said Dr Mohanty.
Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik had recently announced purchase of six ECMO machines for treatment of seriously infected lungs patients. The ECMO machines would be installed at SCB Medical College and Hospital, the CM had said.
It may be mentioned that two patients, Sai International School Chief Bijay Kumar Sahoo and former MLA Nabin Nanda's son Sambit Nanda, from Odisha have already died of ECMO problem.
While Vigilance Director Debasis Panigrahy was airlifted to Kolkata yesterday, a young engineer, Ahishek Mohapatra, was being airlifted to the West Bengal capital today for the ECMO treatment. Some other Covid patients are battling for life under such a condition also.
