Bhubaneswar, Apr 9: A day after the Utkal University authorities asked its PG first and fourth semester students to vacate their hostel rooms in view of the growing Covid-19 cases in the state capital, students took to streets on Friday against the decision and blocked the National Highway.
Hundreds of students objected the Utkal University’s Residence Committee’s order in which it said the PG fourth semester boarders will vacate the hostels by April 12 and first semester boarders not later than April 16 by locking the main gate.
Later, the students resorted to sloganeering against the varsity authorities as well as the Bhubaneswar Municipal Corporation (BMC) for its unilateral decision and staged a blockade at Vani Vihar Square on the NH-16.
Notably, on Tuesday the BMC had issued an advisory directing all government and the residential educational institution authorities in Bhubaneswar to empty their hostels of students.
While demonstrating in front of the varsity entrance the students cited the case of Pipili by-poll and asked whether allowing thousands of people to campaign there is right amidst the resurgence of Covid.
The agitating students have suggested the authorities that instead of closing the hostels they should take suitable steps to stop spreading of Corona inside those.
