Chennai, Feb 9: England on Tuesday won the first Test against India by 227 runs at the MA Chidambaram Stadium here and led the four-match series 1-0.
Chasing a mammoth 420-run target, India were bundled out for 192 runs in their second innings, as wickets fell like ninepins on the fifth day of the match.
Skipper Virat Kohli scored 72 while Shubman Gill scored a swashbuckling 50. Among others, Rohit Sharma and Cheteswar Pujara scored 12 and 15 respectively while Ajinkya Rahane went for a duck.
For the visitors, Jack Leach scalped 4 wickets while James Anderson took 3wickets in the second innings. Besides, Jofra Archer, Dominic Bess and Ben Stokes shared one wicket each.
Yesterday, England's second innings was restricted on 178 runs as R. Ashwin scalped six wickets while Shahbaz Nadeem claimed two wickets. Pacer duo Jasprit Bumrah and Ishant Sharma bagged one wicket each.
The second Test between India and England will be played at the MA Chidambaram Stadium here from February 13.
