Bengaluru, Dec 26: Odisha fast bowler Rajesh Mohanty created history by becoming the first cricketer from the state to claim a hat-trick in List A cricket during the Vijay Hazare Trophy 2025–26 match against Services at Alur Cricket Stadium III on Friday.
The 25-year-old seamer achieved the feat in the seventh over after Odisha won the toss and elected to field. Mohanty began by bowling Sagar Dahiya, followed by trapping Ayush Shukla lbw off the very next delivery. He completed his hat-trick by dismissing Ravi Chauhan for a golden duck.
Mohanty finished with figures of 3 for 25 in nine overs as Odisha bundled out Services for 83, their second-lowest total in Vijay Hazare Trophy history.
He received strong support from Sambit S Baral, who returned 4 for 21 in 8.5 overs, while Badal Biswal chipped in with 2 for 20.
The milestone came days after Mohanty went unsold at the IPL 2026 mini-auction, where he had registered with a base price of Rs 30 lakh. Despite the setback, the right-arm pacer continues to impress at the domestic level.
Mohanty has now taken 41 wickets in 38 List A matches, alongside 124 wickets from 34 First-Class games. In T20 cricket, he has claimed 27 wickets in 28 innings.
In the chase, Odisha were briefly tested by Poonam Poonia (4/27) and Nitin Yadav (2/20). However, a composed unbeaten 32 off 69 balls by Sandeep Pattnaik guided Odisha to victory in 24.3 overs.
It can be mentioned here that the 25-year-old bowler has taken 124 wickets in 34 First Class matches with an impressive average of 24.54, while in List A, Mohanty has bagged 41 wickets after playing 38 matches.
