New Delhi, Aug 7: Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan marked National Handloom Day by proudly wearing traditional handloom attire from Odisha during parliamentary proceedings.

His gesture was a tribute to the timeless beauty and cultural heritage of Odisha’s weaving traditions.

Celebrated annually on August 7, National Handloom Day commemorates the launch of the Swadeshi Movement in 1905 and honours the contributions of India’s weavers. In its 11th edition this year, the day saw vibrant celebrations across the country, with Odisha hosting a week-long showcase of its rich handloom legacy.

Speaking on the occasion, Pradhan emphasized that Odisha’s handloom is not merely clothing but a reflection of the state’s emotional and cultural identity. “Each weave is a confluence of tradition, craftsmanship, and artistic expression,” he said, adding that artisans and weavers are transforming the sector through innovation and skill.

The Union Education Minister also joined fellow MPs from Odisha in celebrating the state’s weaving heritage, highlighting iconic styles like Sambalpuri and Ikat. “India is a tapestry of diverse handloom traditions — from Kashmir to Kanyakumari, and Kutch to Kibithu. Every thread tells a story of our cultural richness,” Pradhan remarked.

The minister urged citizens to embrace handloom not just on National Handloom Day but every day, as a mark of pride and support for the artisans who breathe life into each fabric. He also called for empowering weavers through policy support, skill development, and market access.

Odisha’s celebrations included the EKTA exhibition and cultural programs, with over 1,500 weavers participating. The events aim to promote sustainable fashion, preserve traditional crafts, and foster knowledge exchange among artisans.
