Bhubaneswar, Aug 18: More than a year after his formal retirement from active politics, VK Pandian’s grip on the Biju Janata Dal (BJD) remains firm, stirring controversy and internal dissent. The former IAS officer and once-trusted aide of former Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik has re-emerged at the center of a political storm, as Patnaik recuperates from dehydration at SUM Ultimate Medicare in the State Capital.

The hospital became a flashpoint for BJD’s internal tensions when senior leaders, including Ranendra Pratap Swain (Raja Swain), were allegedly blocked from meeting Patnaik. Sources claim Pandian reprimanded them and even threatened suspension for questioning the former CM’s health status. Viral audio clips reveal Raja Swain’s frustration over delayed medical attention, accusing Pandian and his wife Sujata Karthikeyan of negligence.

Pandian’s response was reportedly combative. “I am down, not out,” he declared, warning party leaders against probing too deeply. His assertiveness extended beyond party lines when he confronted Odisha Pradesh Congress Committee president Bhakta Das, who had come to visit Patnaik. Das insisted Pandian that the people of Odisha have every right to know about Patnaik, saying, "Naveen Patnaik is an asset of the the State". The exchange drew widespread attention, further fueling speculation about Pandian’s unofficial command over Patnaik.

Despite stepping down in June 2024 after BJD’s electoral defeat, Pandian’s influence appears undiminished. His wife Sujata also faced backlash for the delay in Patnaik’s hospitalization, adding to the perception of a power couple steering party affairs from behind the curtain.

While BJD General Secretary Manmath Routray defended Pandian’s actions as necessary for maintaining order, many within the party are questioning the legitimacy of his authority. With Naveen Patnaik’s health in focus, the episode has reignited debates over succession, transparency, and internal democracy.

As the party stands at a crossroads, the question looms large: will BJD reclaim its collective leadership or continue under the shadow of Pandian’s informal rule?
