Boating on the Ganga river in Varanasi has been prohibited after 8:30 p.m., officials said.

Varanasi, May 2: Boating on the Ganga river in Varanasi has been prohibited after 8:30 p.m., officials said.

The decision has been taken keeping in view the safety of the tourists, said Water Police In-charge Mithilesh Yadav.

According to the Water Police In-charge, drowning incidents increased in May and June.

For the safety of tourists and visitors, security has been increased in the Ganga by Jal Police and arrangements have been made to increase vigil on weekends.

Yadav added that four teams, including two of NDRF and two of Water Police on two boats, have been deployed to keep a vigil on the Ganga.

In addition, a boat crew, and three security personnel have been deployed.

Yadav said that the decision to restrict the operation of the boats after 8:30 p.m. has been taken with the consent of the boatmen community.

If any boat is found operating after 8:30 p.m., the boat will be seized and an FIR will be registered against the boatman. Also, action will be taken to cancel the license of the boat.

The step is being undertaken because of the continuous increase of tourists in Kashi.

After 8:30 p.m., a monitoring team will warn sailors through loud hailers.

Sambalpur, May 17: Senior BJD leader and Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik's close aide V K Pandian on Friday made a blooper by saying "Santha Kabi Gangadhar Meher" and "Kabi Bhim Bhoi" during his election speech in Sambalpur, triggering a row over ‘Odia Asmita’ or Odia pride.

Addressing an election rally in Sambalpur, Pandian called "Swabhaba Kabi Gangadhar Meher" as "Santha Kabi Gangadhar Meher ''. He also said "Kabi Bhim Bhoi'' instead of "Santha Kabi Bhim Bhoi" in his speech in the presence of BJD supremo and Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik, and BJD's organisational secretary Pranab Prakash Das.

The Tamil Nadu-born bureaucrat-turned-politician's remark on Odia legends sparked a huge political storm across the state as Opposition BJP has selectively made ‘Odia Asmita’ or Odia pride as its main poll plank this elections.

Earlier, the BJD government landed in controversy as the name of a renowned poet like Kanta Kabi (Laxmikanta Mohapatra) was mispronounced as ‘Kantha Kabi’ at the first World Odia Language Conference in Bhubaneswar.

The assembly and Lok Sabha polls in Odisha are being held across four phases--from May 13 to June 1.

Polling for the first phase was conducted in 28 Assembly seats and four Lok Sabha constituencies on May 13. In the fifth phase, 35 Assembly seats and five Lok Sabha constituencies will vote on May 20, 42 Assembly segments and six Lok Sabha seats on May 25 and the remaining 42 Assembly seats and six Lok Sabha constituencies in the last phase on June 1.

The results will be out on June 4.

Bengaluru, May 17: India stalwart batter Virat Kohli shared an anecdote from his personal life and also gave an update on the health of his newborn son Akaay.

During a candid conversation with Mr Nags, played by Danish Sait, Kohli spoke about his daughter Vamika's growing interest in cricket.

"My daughter has picked up the cricket bat and she's enjoying swinging the bat. I'm not sure, their choice is final," Kohli said.

In February, Kohli and his wife Anushka Sharma were blessed with a baby boy. Kohli and Anushka revealed that the baby boy was born on February 15.

"Baby is good, healthy. Everything is fine, thank you!" Kohli said when asked about his son Akaay.

Kohli is currently a part of the Royal Challengers Bengaluru in the ongoing Indian Premier League. He has been a crucial figure in the franchise's hunt for a spot in the playoffs.
