Bhubaneswar: October 24: AIIMS Bhubaneswar’s Department of Burns & Plastic Surgery successfully conducted a national-level Hand Fracture Fixation Workshop, emphasizing the critical role of plastic surgeons in restoring both function and aesthetics in hand trauma cases, officials said on Friday.

Organized under the aegis of the Indian Society for Surgery of the Hand (ISSH) and the Association of Plastic Reconstructive Aesthetic Surgeons of Odisha (APRASO), the event drew experts and trainees from across the country.

Restoring Form and Function

Executive Director Dr. Ashutosh Biswas highlighted the multidisciplinary expertise of plastic surgeons in managing hand fractures. “Plastic surgeons combine microsurgery, soft tissue reconstruction, and bony fixation to restore both form and function,” he said, stressing the importance of tendon, nerve, and vascular repair in achieving optimal recovery.

Dr. Sanjay Kumar Giri, Head of the Department, elaborated on various fixation techniques such as pins, plates, screws, and wires. He noted that in complex cases involving bone loss or non-union, bone grafting and microsurgical interventions are essential to restore circulation, sensation, and mobility.
