Balasore, Jan 23: Three wagons of a goods train derailed near Rupsa station in Odisha’s Balasore district on Friday, officials of the South Eastern Railway (SER) said. No causalities or injuries were reported in the incident.

The derailment occurred around 10 AM when the train was departing Rupsa station after unloading cement and fertilisers. As the train headed towards Kharagpur, three wagons jumped off the track, disrupting movement in the Bhadrak–Kharagpur section.

Railway officials immediately rushed to the site to assess the situation and initiate restoration work. Senior SER officials said technical teams were deployed to clear the affected wagons and restore normal traffic at the earliest.

While passenger services were not directly impacted, officials indicated that freight movement in the section could face temporary delays until the track is fully restored. The cause of the derailment is yet to be ascertained, though preliminary reports suggest possible track or wagon-related issues.

Local police and railway staff ensured safety measures at the site, and the area was cordoned off to prevent public access. Officials reiterated that there was no damage to nearby infrastructure and no risk to humans, as the train was a freight service.

The incident highlights the need for continued vigilance in railway operations, particularly in busy corridors such as the Bhadrak–Kharagpur section, which serves as a vital link for freight and passenger traffic in eastern India.
