Bhubaneswar, Oct 5: Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan on Sunday paid heartfelt tribute to Baji Rout, India’s youngest martyr and a revered freedom fighter from Odisha, on the occasion of his birth anniversary.
Taking to social media, Pradhan tweeted, “Homage to India's youngest martyr and Odisha's heroic freedom fighter martyr Baji Rout on his birth anniversary,” honouring the legacy of the young revolutionary who laid down his life resisting British colonial forces.
Baji Rout, who was only 12 years old at the time of his martyrdom, is remembered for his fearless defiance against British troops in 1938. His sacrifice has become a symbol of youthful courage and patriotism, especially in Odisha, where his story continues to inspire generations.
Pradhan’s tribute comes as part of a broader national remembrance, with leaders and citizens alike commemorating Baji Rout’s contribution to India’s freedom struggle. Events and memorial services are being held across Odisha to mark the occasion.

Rout, who worked as a boatman, was shot by the Indian Imperial Police when he refused to ferry them across the Brahmani River on the night of 11 October 1938 at Nilakanthapur Ghat, Bhuban, Dhenkanal district.
As an active member of the Banar Sena of Prajamandal (Party of People),Rout had volunteered to keep watch by the river at night. The police ordered him to cross the river by his boat which he denied. The police then shot and killed Baji Rout.
