Bhubaneswar, Nov 20: The Odisha government is set to increase compensation for families of snakebite victims from the existing ₹4 lakh to ₹10 lakh, following directions from the Supreme Court.

The move comes in response to the apex court’s recent order asking all state governments to revise compensation norms for snakebite-related fatalities.

Revenue and Disaster Management Minister Suresh Pujari, Wednesday, confirmed that the proposal is under review. He noted that Odisha had earlier written to the Centre recommending the enhancement, and once the revised framework is approved, it will be implemented nationwide.

Currently, snakebite deaths account for one of the highest causes of disaster-related fatalities in the state, surpassing even cyclones and floods. Official data reveals that over 1,000 people die annually due to venomous snakebites in Odisha, with the numbers rising significantly during the monsoon season. In just the past two days, nine people have lost their lives across different districts.

Statistics presented in the Assembly earlier this year highlight the alarming trend:

• 305 deaths were recorded in 2016, 823 in 2019, and 1,001 in 2023.
• Between the financial years 2023-24 and 2024-25, a total of 1,859 people died due to snakebites, including 1,150 deaths in 2023-24 alone.
• Nearly 90% of disaster-related deaths in Odisha are attributed to drowning and snakebites.

The Supreme Court, in its January directive, also instructed the Centre to ensure that anti-venom and snakebite treatment facilities are made available at all primary and community health centres across the country. This measure aims to reduce fatalities and provide timely medical intervention in rural and remote areas.

For families who lose loved ones to snakebites, the enhanced compensation is expected to provide some relief, though officials stress that prevention and access to treatment remain the most critical priorities.
